Text: Acts 16–19
There are many people today who believe Satan is nothing more than a symbol of evil.
They believe demons are merely ancient superstition.
Hollywood has successfully turned them into entertainment.
And the occult has turned them into curiosity.
Although some Psycologist are finally beginning to call evil for what it is, EVIL
Most of modern psychology often ignores them altogether,
But the Bible never treats the demonic world as mythology.
The Scriptures teach that angels are real.
The Scriptures teach that Satan is real.
The Scriptures also teaches that demons are real.
The Bible tells us in
12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
As we continue our journey through the Book of Acts,
Luke reminds us that Christianity is not merely another philosophy competing in the marketplace of ideas.
Rather, it is a declaration of war against the kingdom of darkness.
And the reality is,
Wherever the Gospel enters...
Hell pushes back.
But every time hell pushes back...
Jesus proves His authority. AMEN
We read, that Paul receives the Macedonian Call.
Instead of remaining in Asia, God directs him toward Europe.
This wasn't Paul's plan.
It was God's.
The greatest missionary journeys were never built around Paul's preferences.
They were built around God's direction.
How many blessings have we missed in our own lives, because we insisted on our own plans?
II. Three Different Hearts...One Saving Gospel

Acts chapter 16 introduces us to three completely different people.
There is Lydia
There is Lydia
A wealthy businesswoman.
Religious.
Successful.
Respected.
Still yet lost.
But, The Lord opened her heart.
Money couldn't save her.
Religion couldn't save her.
Only Christ could save her.
There’s the Slave Girl
There’s the Slave Girl
This young woman couldn't have been more different.
She wasn't wealthy.
She wasn't respected.
She wasn't free.
She was owned by men.
But even worse...
She was possessed by an evil spirit.
The Spirit of Divination
We know that’s what she had because Luke tells us she had "a spirit of divination."
16 Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling.
The Greek phrase literally refers to the spirit of Python.
In Greek mythology, Python was the serpent associated with the oracle of Delphi.
People believed this spirit could reveal hidden knowledge and predict the future.
Whether those pagan myths were true is not the issue.
The issue is this:
The Bible says a demon had taken possession of this girl.
She wasn't pretending.
And she was not mentally ill.
The Word of God is very clear here…
She was demonized.
The Bible makes a distinction between sickness and demon possession.
Jesus healed diseases.
Jesus also cast out demons.
The apostles did the same.
We shouldn’t dare dismiss everything supernatural
Just because modern culture is uncomfortable with it.
Because Demons Are Still Real
The Bible never suggests demons disappeared after the first century.
Satan has simply adapted his methods.
He doesn't always appear with frightening manifestations.
Sometimes he disguises himself.
Sometimes through false religion.
Sometimes through occult practices.
Sometimes through witchcraft.
Sometimes through fortune telling.
Sometimes through spirit guides.
Sometimes through astrology.
Sometimes through séances.
Sometimes through New Age spirituality.
Sometimes through Ouija boards.
Sometimes even through the worship of self.
The devil doesn't care how people are deceived...
As long as they remain deceived.
Paul later warned that Satan transforms himself into an angel of light.
One of Satan's greatest victories is convincing people he doesn't exist.
This possessed girl followed Paul everywhere shouting,
17 This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, “These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation.”
Everything she said was technically true.
Yet Paul refused to accept demonic advertising.
Truth coming from an unclean source still dishonors God.
God doesn’t need Satan to validate His Gospel.
Eventually Paul turns around.
Not because he is annoyed.
But because he is grieved.
Filled with holy authority, he commands,
18 And this she did for many days. But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And he came out that very hour.
Immediately...
The demon left.
Notice something.
Paul didn’t negotiate.
He didn’t perform a ritual.
He didn’t argue.
He simply spoke the authority of Jesus Christ.
The power was never in Paul.
The power was always in Christ.
Now, the girl's owners become furious.
Why?
Because they lost their income.
Their business depended upon her bondage.
The Gospel is always a threat to those profiting through sin
Whenever Christ sets captives free...
Someone's idols get exposed
We are told, Paul and Silas are beaten.
Humiliated.
Thrown into prison.
Feet fastened in stocks.
Yet at midnight...
They begin singing.
Not because prison was pleasant.
Because Jesus was still worthy.
Some people only praise God when life is easy.
Watch this, and let this serve as a lesson for us.
Paul praised Him while bleeding.
That’s the kind of faith that shakes heaven. Amen
And I mean that Literally.
Because the Bible tells us that God sent an earthquake.
25 But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. 26 Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone’s chains were loosed.
And the heavy chains fall.
And the jail doors open.
The jailer assumes every prisoner escaped.
Knowing Roman law, he prepares to end his own life.
Paul shouts,
"Don’t hurt yourself”
Notice here, the greatest miracle wasn't the earthquake.
It was transforming of hearts.
The jailer asks the greatest question ever asked:
29 Then he called for a light, ran in, and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. 30 And he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”
Paul gives one of Scripture's clearest answers.
31 So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.”
It doesn not say,
Believe and earn your way in.
nor does it say, —Believe and perform some kind of special act.
It doesn’t say believe and go deserve it somehow.
But rather, just Believe.
Faith alone in Christ alone.
Acts chapter 18 reminds us that ministry
is not reserved for famous preachers.
Because, God uses tentmakers.
Aquila and Priscilla quietly disciple Apollos.
However, they don't embarrass him publicly.
But they lovingly teach him more accurately.
You see, this is another reason why missions is no important
because, Healthy churches build disciples.
Not celebrities or big name preachers.
Now, when Paul arrives in Ephesus in chapter 19
God performs some extraordinary miracles through him
People publicly confess their sins.
Then something remarkable happens.
to which, as a side note, I pray will happen through out all of Mexico soon
Those involved in magic...
Brought their books.
Their scrolls.
Their occult practices.
And burned them.
They didn’t sell them.
They burned them.
Why?
Because some things should never be passed to someone else.
And repentance. I mean true repentance, will always costs something.
They willingly destroyed fortunes because Christ had become to them, more valuable.
Then comes one of the most fascinating stories in Acts.
The seven sons of Sceva.
They think Jesus is merely another magical formula.
They attempt to cast out demons.
13 Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “We exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches.” 14 Also there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did so. 15 And the evil spirit answered and said, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?” 16 Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
The demon answered them saying,
"Jesus I know.
Paul I know.
But who are you?"
The possessed man attacks them.
One demon defeats seven men.
Why?
Now watch this:
Because they had religion without relationship.
Authority without salvation.
The name of Jesus is not a magic word.
His authority belongs to those who belong to Him.
As revival began to spread
regular Business declines.
The silversmiths begin to panic.
Their idol-making industry begins collapsing.
Why?
Because people who meet Jesus stop buying idols.
When enough hearts change...
Entire economies change.
The Gospel will always transform societies from the inside out.
Christianity didn't conquer Rome through politics.
It conquered Rome one converted heart at a time.
Some today laugh at the existence of demons.
Scripture does not.
Because The devil is real.
His demons are real.
Spiritual warfare is real.
But there is even greater news.
Jesus is real.
His authority is absolute.
His cross defeated Satan.
His resurrection sealed the victory.
No demon has ever defeated Jesus.
No devil has ever surprised Jesus.
No darkness has ever overpowered Jesus.
The same Savior who delivered that slave girl...
Still delivers today.
He frees addicts.
He frees the oppressed.
He frees the guilty.
He frees the hopeless.
He still breaks chains.

Invitation
Perhaps your chains aren't made of iron.
Maybe they're chains of
addiction
Fear.
Bitterness.
Pornography.
Alcohol.
Hatred.
Pride.
Occult involvement.
or possibly a Secret sin.
I want you to know right now, today
Whatever has you bound...
Jesus is still setting captives free.
The Gospel has not lost its power.
Hell did not win a victory.
Jesus Christ is still King.
And where the Spirit of the Lord is… There is liberty.
Come to Christ today.
Lay down your chains.
Trust Him.
Because the same Jesus who spoke freedom over a possessed slave girl...
Can speak freedom over your life today.
We Have Seen the Reality of Spiritual Darkness
Church, this isn't just something I read about in a book.
This isn't just something that happened in the first century.
Many of you know that our mission team has returned several times from the mountains of Durango, Mexico.
During one of our trips, while several members of our team were ministering, something happened that none of us will ever forget.
A woman suddenly began to manifest in a way that immediately caught everyone's attention.
Marie and the rest of our team witnessed it firsthand.
There was a dramatic change in her demeanor.
Her behavior became unsettling.
The atmosphere changed almost instantly, almost icy cold
Those present knew they were witnessing something they could not simply explain away.
It was a sobering reminder that spiritual warfare is not confined to the pages of Scripture.
Now let me be careful.
Not every strange behavior is caused by demons.
Mental illness is real.
Emotional trauma is real.
Physical illnesses are real.
The Bible itself distinguishes between disease and demonization.
We should never call every problem demonic.
But neither should we make the opposite mistake of pretending demons no longer exist.
The modern world has become comfortable dismissing the supernatural.
The Bible never does.
Paul didn't laugh at the slave girl's condition.
He recognized there was a real spiritual enemy at work.
And through the authority of Jesus Christ, he commanded that spirit to leave.
Then I would transition with this:
"What struck me in Mexico was not how powerful darkness appeared to be.
What struck me was how much greater the authority of Jesus Christ is.
We never have to fear Satan when we belong to Christ.
The devil is powerful, but he is not all-powerful.
Demons are real, but let us also remember one important turth,
They tremble at the name of Jesus.
The same Lord who delivered the slave girl in Philippi is still Lord today.
One final thought,
I often tell this story that caught me off guard.
I have many books in my personal librart that Ive accumulated over the years,
Good books!
And no one has ever asked about them, save my mom, who, bless her hearts, loves to raid my book shelf.
But, No one ever takes in interest in my books,
Until I mention a book on Demonology,
Then the ears perk up, and people say, “Can I borrow that book”?
Our fascination should never be with demons—it should always be with Christ.
Too many churches become fascinated with demons, exorcisms, and the occult.
Acts sixteen is not primarily about the power of demons.
It is about the absolute authority of Jesus Christ.
Luke doesn't linger on the demon;
Rather, he lingers on the One in whose name the demon immediately obeys.
That emphasis should keep the congregation's focus where Scripture places it:
Not on fear of evil spirits,
But on confidence in the sovereign power of Christ.
